Kashmir gears up for Republic Day

Authorities have ordered a massive security beef up across Kashmir valley ahead of the Republic Day on Saturday.

Additional police and paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force troopers have been deployed in the summer capital Srinagar and other towns to ensure trouble free Republic Day ceremonies in the Valley.

The security is tight around the Bakshi stadium in the heart of summer capital Srinagar, the focal venue where the main function is held.

The area around the stadium has been sanitised and is being guarded round the clock.

Sharp shooters have been positioned on high rise buildings around the stadium.

Vehicles entering the city from other towns are being thoroughly searched by police and CRPF troops at the barricades set up for the purpose.

State Director General of Police Ashok Prasad reviewed the security situation at a high level meeting this afternoon attended by senior police and security force officers.

He said that all necessary efforts should be made to thwart nefarious designs of anti-national elements and nobody should be allowed to disturb the peaceful atmosphere of the state.

Though the Republic Day functions have been incident-free for the past some years now, yet authorities are not taking any chances and are maintaining a maximum vigil.

A full dress rehearsal of the parade was held in Bakshi stadium on Thursday.
