Mumbai's 'Govindas' in action

Last updated on: September 2, 2010 16:26 IST

Courage, patience, concentration and teamwork of the 'Govindas' was on display as Mumbaikars woke up to the sounds of youngsters going around Mumbai in processions, vying for prized 'dahi handis'.

With prizes as high as Rs 31 lakh at some places, the youngsters, including some all-women troupes, wounded their way to the 'handis' in Mumbai and adjoining Thane.

Their objective was to break clay pots filled with butter or curd and tied to ropes as much as 40 feet high. Youngsters form pyramids and stand on top of one another attempting to reach the handis and break them even as their efforts may be thwarted by water splashed on them by those gathered around.

The event is expected to be celebrated throughout the day and to continue late into the night.
