Furore in Kolkata over student leader's death

The blame game between the opposition Communist Party of India - Marxist and the ruling Trinamool Congress -- over the death of Student's Federation of India Sudipto Gupta -- intensified on Wednesday.

According to media reports, Sudipto's post mortem report states that he was beaten to death. There are injury marks on various parts of his body, the report said.

Sudipta's father Pranab Kumar Gupta, claimed that his son died after being brutally lathicharged by the police.

"When I went to visit him at the hospital, his face was completely disfigured. He had lost a lot of blood. He was only 23 years old. He was tortured for nearly three hours. He didn't receive any treatment," he said.

The devastated father added that he would continue to fight for justice as his son had "entrusted him with this responsibility".

The Kolkata police, under fire over Sudipto's death, claimed that it was accident.

The police have claimed that Sudipto died after he fell of a bus in which he, along with other SFI members, were being taken after participating in 'law violation' protests in Kolkata on Tuesday evening.

Sudipto and the other protestors were being taken to Presidency Jail.

The police claimed that its officials had exercised restraint in spite of the protestors throwing rotten eggs and tomatoes at them during the agitation.

When the bus neared Presidency Jail, claimed the police, the sloganeering protestors moved closer to the exit of the bus. When the bus took a turn, Sudipto fell of the bus and hit a PWD lamp-post.

He was immediately rushed to the state-run SSKM Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

SFI general secretary Ritabrata Banerjee claimed that the police had "killed" Sudipto.

He claimed that the incident was an "all-out murder of democracy".

"Demons are ruling this place now," said Banerjee, adding that the CPI-M and SFI will soon draw up a plan to fight the "demonic rule".

Kolkata witnessed protests by several student organisations over Sudipto's death.

Senior CPI-M leader Biman Bose snapped at journalists who questioned him about the party's future course of action over the incident, stating, "We don't listen to journalists while drawing up our programme".

Meanwhile, authorities at the SSKM Hospital claimed that Sudipto had been brought in with "trauma and head injury" at 3 pm on Tuesday.

They stated that the student leader was provided the "best possible critical care".
