Four people were killed and 14 injured as a gunman in a uniform went on rampage at the United States military base in Fort Hood, Texas.

The shooter is among those killed at the installation, which was a scene of 2009 massacre that left 13 soldiers dead.

The shooting is believed to have occurred at the Carl R Darnall Army Medical Center, located at the Fort Hood military base. A shelter in place order has been issued for the civilians and soldiers.

"There is no indication that this incident is related to terrorism although we are not ruling anything out," said the army post's commander Lt Gen Mark A Milley.

The nearby Central Texas College in Killeen immediately evacuated all students and staff after the shooting incident. The classes for the afternoon and evening have been cancelled.

Major Nidal Hasan was given the death penalty last year for murdering 13 people and wounding more than 30 more on the Texas army base on November 5, 2009.
