China's new first lady Peng Liyuan continued with her charm offensive demonstrating her musical talent during a recent visit to Latin America along with her husband President Xi Jinping.

Peng, 51, a famous folk singer holding the rank of major general in the People's Liberation Army, watched the performances with folk dancers and singers and played along with the famous West Indian steel band last weekend at Port of Spain in Trinidad and Tobago, state-run People's Daily reported.

Chinese President Xi Jinping and First Lady Peng Liyuan wave from their plane upon their arrival in Dar es Salaam.

After a steel band played the patriotic Chinese songs 'In the Fields of Hope' and 'My Wonderful Hometown', two of Peng's signature songs, the first lady walked over to the band and played along with them on one of their steel drums.

She told orchestra members their performances during a visit to China in the 1980s had impressed the audiences and they were welcome to come to China to perform again.

Trinidad and Tobago's Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar described Peng as "beautiful and warm".

She said Peng spoke to her in English.

Before the concert, Peng visited a charity that assists children with intellectual disabilities.

Her Port of Spain performance was not the first time that the first lady has stolen the limelight on the international diplomatic stage with her musical talent, Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post commented.

Peng made her "international debut" by accompanying Xi on a visit to Russia after he took over as president in March this year. This is her second trip abroad with him.

China is in the age of first lady diplomacy now, internet users are commenting

Peng's visit was well received at home, with many internet users praising her gracious manner and musical talent.

"She shines at every visit and every appearance is a beautiful scenery," said one Sina on micro blog, the Lone Investor.

Another internet user said: "China is in the age of first lady diplomacy now," the Post reported.
