'60 pc Britons' think Everest is UK's highest peak!

You may call it a curious case of clueless Brits! Nearly six in 10 adults in Britain think that the country's highest peak is Ben Nevis, Snowdon -- or even Mount Everest.

According to a shocking study, more than one in five English adults do not know which countries make up the UK.

One in 20 also have no idea Stonehenge is in Britain -- and almost a quarter named Australia's famed Ayers Rock as a UK landmark, 'The Sun' tabloid reported.

The poll of 2,000 was carried out by tour firm Journeys of  Distinction. Managing Director Karen Gee said: "We were astounded."

The firm said the internet may be partly to blame, with instant answers so readily available that people feel no need to "store" any knowledge in their brains.

20.6 pc clueless about countries that make up UK

As well as the 20.6 per cent who did not know England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland comprise the UK, the same number could not place Blackpool on the map, the report said.

Notably, Mt Everest in Nepal is the world's highest peak at 8,848 metres while Scafell Pike is England's the highest mountain at 978 metres.
