Leptospirosis toll in Gujarat rises to 58

Leptospirosis has claimed 58 lives in Surat and Bulsar districts in south Gujarat.

One more person succumbed to the disease at the Bulsar civil hospital on Wednesday.

During the current monsoon season, 41 people died of the disease in Bulsar district while 17 perished in Surat district, health authorities of the two affected districts said.

Since Wednesday morning, both Bulsar and Surat civil hospitals have each admitted five patients suspected to be suffering from leptospirosis. They said that with the admission of these five patients, the total number of persons undergoing treatment in Bulsar district has gone up to 35. Of them, 19 persons are being treated in the civil hospital, 11 at Navasari civil hospital and the remaining five in private clinics.

About 450 medical survey teams have fanned out to various parts of Bulsar district, particularly the tribal areas, to locate suspected cases of leptospirosis.
