After eluding the police dragnet for nearly a month, former Union minister and Rashtriya Janata Dal MP from Munger Jaiprakash Narain Yadav surrendered before a local court in Jamui on Tuesday.
He had been evading arrest in connection with a case charging him with helping his brother and RJD candidate in the assembly election Vijay Prakash to escape from police custody.
Yadav had been evading arrest since February 2 after a fresh non-bailable warrant was issued against him. He gave himself up before the sub-divisional judicial magistrate A K Jha on Tuesday and was later remanded to judicial custody for 14 days.
The magistrate turned down the prayer of Yadav's counsels Ranapratap Singh and Chitranjan Sinha for granting him bail. Yadav's counsels also petitioned the court for sending him to a hospital as he was not keeping well, but the judge refused, saying that the court would consider it on a later date.
Earlier, the Patna High Court had rejected his anticipatory bail application on February 14. A Jamui court had issued a fresh NBW against Yadav in the case, charging him with causing 'illegal' escape of his brother from police custody on October 18, last year by 'misusing his official position'.
Vijay Prakash was arrested while moving around in the Jamui constituency during polling with over Rs 6 lakh in cash, a licensed rifle, a huge quantity of ammunition and liquor bottles.
