When China backed India's view on terror

In a rare instance, China was among the first countries to support an amendment moved by India in the declaration to be adopted by the World Speakers' Conference, being held in Geneva.

Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar had suggested the insertion of a new paragraph in the declaration on terrorism, which spoke about the seriousness of the threat of terrorism being faced by the human kind and the need to show solidarity and collective action.

When Meira moved the above paragraph for the consideration of the Preparatory Committee,

the first country that supported it was China.

China, while supporting the paragraph, suggested a couple of verbal amendments, which were meant to improve the text.  The amendments suggested by China were promptly accepted by India.

The World Speakers' Conference was inaugurated on Monday in the United Nations Assembly Hall in Geneva by Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. Speakers from 150 countries are participating in the conference.  

This conference will, among other things, review the progress in meeting the Millennium Development Goals.
