A man was arrested for allegedly assaulting two women and attempting to molest them in Howrah, the police said on Wednesday. The incident took place on Monday, barely a km from ever-busy Howrah station, when the woman who hails from Mumbai was returning to her hotel with her friend, they said.

The accused, a local fish seller passed lewd comments at the two young women and when they protested he assaulted them and tried to molest them, the police said.

The women too put up a spirited defence and slapped him but was unable to stop him, they said. The locals, who gathered at the spot on hearing the women's call for help, caught the man and handed him over to the police.

The police arrested the man and booked him under sections 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 325 (punishment for voluntarily causing grievous hurt) and 506 (criminal intimidation).

The man was later enlarged on bail. The incident took place barely two days after a techie jumped out of a moving train at Belur to escape a molester. Mumbai-based woman was on a visit to the city with her aged father.
