Eight United States Congressmen have thanked India for favouring the International Atomic Energy Agency resolution against Iran's nuclear programme and hoped New Delhi would "stand with the international community" in case Tehran fails to comply with it.

India votes to refer Iran to UNSC

Expressing happiness over India's support to the international nuclear watchdog resolution on September 24, the lawmakers -- both Republican and Democrat -- thanked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in a letter for India's "commitment to nonproliferation and global security" and for "working closely with the US government" on the issue.

"This cooperation can only help strengthen the strategic cooperation between our two countries," the letter signed by Mark Steven Kirk, Steve Israel, Tom Tancredo, Joseph Crowley, Jerry Weller, Dan Burton, Henry E Brown and Brian Higgins of the US Congress said.

"While this (Sep 24) resolution's enactment represents a significant step forward, we expect Iran's portfolio to be brought up again at the IAEA for referral to the United Nations Security Council," they said, adding, "Should Iran fail to comply (with the IAEA statute), we hope India will stand with the international community in supporting referral to the Security Council."

The lawmakers stated in the letter that the September 24 IAEA resolution was necessiated after it was found that Iran's
breach of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty obligations constituted non-compliance with the IAEA statute.
