Year 2050 will see minority groups making up around 49.9% of the American population, according to a US Census Bureau report.

The Asian community's representation will see a huge jump from 3.8% in 2000 to 8% in 2050, the Financial Times says quoting from the report.

The proportion of the population who are Hispanic will rise to 24.4% in 2050 from 12.6% in 2000, the report says.

The proportion of the population who are "non-Hispanic white", which made up nearly 70% of the total in 2000, is expected to drop to around 50%, it says.

The black population, which in 2000 was roughly the same as the Hispanic population, is expected to grow more slowly, to make up 14.6% of Americans by 2050.

America will get older, too. Nearly 21% of its residents will be 65 or older, compared with 12% now, the report says.

The figures predict a big rise in the overall population, from 282 million in 2000 to nearly 420 million by 2050.

In other Western nations, such as Germany, Italy and Spain, populations are expected to decline in the next 50 years.
