Topping the list of New Year's resolutions among American workers is finding a new job in 2004, a survey has found.

Workers are motivated by the desire to find a more satisfactory work experience, make more money and advance their careers, the survey by CareerBuilder.com has found.

Nearly one-in-four workers (24 per cent) surveyed said they are generally dissatisfied with their jobs.

Although this is an improvement over the 29 per cent who said they were dissatisfied in a survey conducted in December 2002, more workers today are on the prowl for a new job than a year ago.

Thirty-five per cent of the workers said they planned to change jobs in 2003 compared to 40 per cent in 2004.

"Workers plan to capitalise on an improved economy and seek out opportunities that will increase pay scales and propel their careers forward. After enduring layoffs, heavier workloads and postponed raises, workers expect to be compensated fairly and competitively with salary increases, bonuses or promotions," said Matt Ferguson, president and chief operating officer of the website.

Sixty per cent of the surveyed workers did not receive a bonus in 2003 and 40 per cent did not receive a salary hike. The vast majority received a salary increase of five per cent or less and only 18 per cent received an increase of 10 per cent or more.
