February 15, 2013 14:58 IST

A United States diplomat's vehicle collided with a motorcycle in the Pakistani capital, leaving a man dead and another injured, police officials said on Friday.

The accident occurred near Constitution Avenue, one of the main thoroughfares in a high-security zone in the heart of Islamabad, at 9.30 pm on Thursday night.

The two Pakistani nationals involved in the incident were taken to a state-run hospital, where one of them succumbed to his injuries at around midnight, officials said.

A statement issued by the US embassy acknowledged that one of its accredited diplomats was involved in the road accident and that his vehicle collided with the motorcycle.

"The US embassy employee also sustained minor injuries, was treated, and released," the statement said.

"The US Embassy wishes to extend its heartfelt condolences to the families affected by this tragedy. We have and will continue to cooperate fully with the appropriate Pakistani authorities on the investigation, and are working through our local insurance company to address financial questions or concerns," the statement said.

The embassy also expressed its ‘deepest regret for this terrible accident’.

Interior Minister Rehman Malik, in a message posted on Twitter, said he had directed the police to take action according to the law.
