Curfew in UP town after police firing kills three

An indefinite curfew was imposed in Farenda town in Maharajganj district of Uttar Pradesh on Friday after three persons were killed when police opened fire on a group of students protesting the killing of their leader.

Angry students also torched a train coach.

Student leader Santosh Kumar Jaiswal was shot by members of a rival group inside the Lal Bahadur Shastri College on Thursday.

The mob had set fire to the official vehicles of Nautanava Sub Divisional Magistrate, Additional Superintendent of Police Maharajganj and damaged many vehicles on the road. The revolver of a Station House Officer was snatched by the mob that also physically assaulted him.

Inspector General and Deputy Inspector General of Police, Gorakhpur Zone and Gorakhpur Commissioner rushed to the spot after receiving the news.
