Assam: 3 ULFA militants held, explosives seized

Assam police recovered a huge quantity of explosives, arms and ammunition from three militants belonging to the banned United Liberation Front of Asom around 11.30 am on Saturday under Jalukbari police station in the western fringe of Guwahati.

Police suspected that the militants were carrying the trans-shipment to carry out strikes in Guwahati.

Acting on an intelligence input, city police intercepted a red Maruti Van (As 01 H 3508) at the western entry point to the city under Jalukbari police station and recovered a huge quantity of arms and ammunition, beside arresting the ULFA militants.

The recovery included 4.5 kg of RDX explosives, two M 20 pistols, eight Austria-made hand grenades, 190 rounds of ammunition of AK 47 assault rifles, two switches of programmable timer devices, one remote control device for detonating improvised explosive devices, seven letter pads of the banned ULFA and other incriminating documents, beside Rs 11,000 in cash.

The three ULFA militants arrested in this connection were identified as Sasanka Baruah, a senior leader of the outfit's 28th battalion, Rakhi alias Dipa Gogoi and Moni Goala.

Police informed that the ultras were suspected to be in an assignment to carry out major strikes in Guwahati.

The militants were travelling in the vehicle laden with explosives, arms and ammunition from Dhupdhara in Goalpara district of western Assam to Guwahati.

The ammunition were suspected to be brought from Meghalaya's Garo Hills district that has a long porous border with Bangladesh.
