ULFA 'foreign', 'finance' secretaries granted bail

January 10, 2011 21:04 IST

Two top United Liberation Front of Asom leaders -- 'foreign secretary' Sasha Choudhury and 'finance secretary' Chitraban Hazarika -- were granted bail on Monday by a special TADA court paving the way for their release.

Choudhury was granted bail in four TADA cases pending against him while there were three cases against Hazarika in which he was given bail.

The duo were likely to be released on Tuesday.

The rebel group's 'chairman' Arabinda Rajkhowa was released on January 1.

Choudhury and Hazarika were arrested in Bangladesh in November 2009 and were handed over to Indian authorities. They are lodged in the Guwahati Central Jail.

Besides Rajkhowa, other jailed ULFA leaders who were released on bail include 'advisor' Bhimakanta Buragohain, 'vice chairman' Pradip Gogoi, 'deputy commander-in-chief' Raju Barua, 'publicity secretary' Mithinga Daimary and 'cultural secretary' Pranati Deka.

The ULFA leaders have been released after the government decided not to oppose their bail application to facilitate the process of peace talks between the group and the government.
