ULFA anti-talks faction no longer a threat: Assam police

February 25, 2012 20:15 IST
The Assam police no longer consider the anti-talks faction of the United Liberation Front of Asom led by Paresh Barua a major threat because of the depleting base of the outfit that 'doesn't have any more dedicated and committed cadres', said a highly-placed source in the state police.

All the senior and founder leaders of the outfit have already parted ways with Barua to hold talks with the Indian government. Barua, who is based in Myanmar, enjoys the support of only one senior leader -- Jibon Moran.

The Assam police is not perturbed by the numerous video clippings dispatched to the media by Barua from his

base in the Myanmar territory, which shows armed cadres in battle fatigues.  "The new recruits are of dubious backgrounds. They are not lured by ideology of the ULFA," said the police official.

However, Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi maintains that the government was keeping the door open for dialogue with the Barua-led ULFA faction.

What is worrying the Assam police is that the Maoists elements which are trying to its spread tentacles in Assam in coordination with the ULFA anti-talks faction.
