Indian lawyers aspiring to become solicitors in England and Wales no longer have to travel all the way to that country to appear in the qualifying test.

From now they can take the exams in India.

British High Commissioner to India Sir Michael Arthur on Wednesday announced that New Delhi and Mumbai are being opened as
centres for Indian lawyers to appear in the Qualified Lawyers Transfer Test, which the foreign candidates have to clear for practicing as solicitors in the United Kingdom.

Without passing the QLTT, an Indian lawyer could practice only Indian law in England. The lawyer would also not be able to carry out activities reserved for solicitors like conferencing, applications for probates and litigation.

"Indian lawyers are welcome in UK. This is a positive development that demonstrates the growing practical cooperation between India and the UK, not just in the legal sector but in so many areas," Arthur said, launching the tests in India.
