UK terror plot: Sabeel Ahmed's family questioned

July 06, 2007 00:00 IST

A police team led by a senior official on Thursday questioned the family of Sabeel Ahmed, one of the two Indian doctors detained in connection with the failed terror plot in Britain.

The team led by Deputy Commissioner of Crime Ravikante Gowda, which included a policewoman, visited the house of Sabeel at Banashankari, a middle-class locality, and questioned his family, a senior police official said.

Police wanted to know about the "background" of the family and collected information relating to it, Bipin Gopalkrishna, additional commissioner of police (law and order), told PTI.

Zakia Ahmed, mother of Sabeel, and her husband Maqbool Ahmed are both retired professors of Bangalore Medical College.

According to Zakia, the families of Sabeel, who was detained in Liverpool, and Mohammed Haneef, the other doctor arrested in Brisbane in connection with the failed attack, are related.

Both Sabeel and Haneef had studied at Dr B R Ambedkar Medical College.

Gopalkrishna said they had still not received any communication from the British authorities. City Police Commissioner Achuta Rao had earlier said the Bangalore police were conducting their "own inquiries."
