Two militants from the banned National Democratic Front of Bodoland were killed in an encounter with security forces at Mahendrapur, under Gossaingaon police station in Kokrajhar district, in Assam on Saturday morning.

The entire state has been put on alert following a warning by intelligence agencies that the NDFB and United Liberation Front of Asom are planning to carry out blasts across Assam.

One of the slain NDFB cadres was identified as Abani Basumatary. Security forces recovered two 9 mm pistols and incriminating documents from the slain cadres.

Meanwhile, a woman ULFA cadre and explosive expert Jonali Rajbonghi was arrested in Guwahati on the eve of Rahul Gandhi's visit. According to the police, she planned to trigger a blast in the city with the help of two NDFB cadres. These cadres were arrested at Barpeta, on the way to Guwahati, by the police.

A police source informed that the ULFA and the anti-talks faction of the NDFB had sealed a pact to strike terror across the state. The Army and the police force have intensified operations against the NDFB ultras and killed at least 10 militants of the outfit in the last fortnight.

According to the police, some newly trained ULFA cadres had sneaked in eastern Assam after undergoing training in Myanmar and Arunachal Pradesh jungles, to carry out terror activities in areas where the tea and oil industry is located.
