The Railway Police have lodged a first information report against three linemen for 'gross negligence', which resulted in the mishap involving the Sabarmati Express at Samlaya, near Vadodara, in Gujarat, killing 17 people.

The FIR has been registered against Jaysinh Lalsinh Vasava, Budubhai Punabhai Baria and Balwantsinh Baria under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, Railway Police sources said in Vadodara on Monday.

According to the sources, the three accused had admitted the accident was caused by their mistake and they had not informed the higher-ups about the non-functioning of the traffic signal system and took the decision on their own to change the tracks of the train.

The Sabarmati Express collided with a stationary goods train on April 21. Over 125 people were injured in the accident.

Meanwhile, the commissioner of railway safety, probing the rail mishap said the preliminary report will be submitted within a fortnight while the final report will be ready in two months.

All materials relevant to the probe have been collected, CRS Prashant Kumar told PTI in Vadodara.

Kumar, who began the inquiry on Saturday and visited the accident site, said he recorded the statements of railway staff, including signalmen and traffic operators, on the last day of the investigation on Monday.
