Train derails in Karnataka, 4 dead

Four women -- Tahseena, Asheena, Prabhamani and Suma -- were killed and 25 injured when five bogies of a Bangalore-bound train from Mysore derailed in Mandya district of Karnataka at around 0630 IST, Thursday.

 

The rear bogies of the 231 Mysore-Bangalore 'push-pull' train jumped off the tracks near Palahalli Gate area, 25 km from Mysore.

 

Superintendent of Police, Mandya, R Hitendra, told the Press Trust of India from the accident spot that the last bogie overturned after derailing.

 

Ambulances and a medical train from Mysore have reached the site.

 

Thirteen injured have been admitted to hospitals in Mysore and Srirangapatnam, the police officer said. Others suffered minor injuries.

 

He said two passengers are "missing" and they could have left the spot on their own after the mishap.

 

The

accident happened because the wheel disc of one of the coaches broke, railway authorities said.

 

The commissioner of railway safety, Southern Circle, Bangalore, will conduct an inquiry, a railway release said.
