June 26, 2011 20:36 IST

Neeraj Kumar, director general of Tihar jail, has ordered high level inquiry into the alleged call girl racket being run from inside Delhi's high security prison.

Assistant Jail Superintendent R Maurya was caught red-handed during a raid soliciting call girls at his official residence within the jail premises. His family was away in Bihar at the time of the incident, which took place few weeks ago.

When contacted, Tihar jail spokesman Sunil Kumar Gupta told rediff.com, "An assistant superintendent and a constable have been suspended after they were caught with two call girls in the jail complex's living quarters. An inquiry has been ordered into the incident. Action will be taken once we get the report. This is a matter of serious concern."

A senior police official told rediff.com that Maurya had allegedly hired the services of warden Raj Kumar to do the job and paid him money to get the call girls for entertainment. The warden too has been placed under suspension.

The police official claimed that this is not the first time that an incident of this nature had taken place inside Tihar jail.

When notorious criminal Deva was lodged in Tihar jail, he allegedly organised a mujra where some of the top jail officials were entertained, the official added.

Neeraj Kumar was unavailable for comments.
