TMC hints at going alone in next Lok Sabha polls

Buoyed by its resounding victory in four out of five civic bodies whose results were announced on Monday, the Trinamool Congress hinted at going it alone in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections and hoped that it would do "very well".

"The results show that the Trinamool Congress is ready to fight the Lok Sabha elections alone. In future, we will perform very well," party all-India general secretary Mukul Roy told reporters here after the results were declared.

"This is the last election before the Lok Sabha polls and people have once again reposed their faith in the vision of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the all-round development work being done by her in West Bengal," Roy said.

He said the party would hold a public rally at the Brigade Parade Ground in the heart of the city here on January 30 "to thank the people of Bengal." Roy said apart from resounding victory in four out of five municipal bodies, the party has won in 23 of the 29 wards that went for by-elections in 23 municipal bodies strewn across the state.

"This again proves the faith reposed by the people of all parts of Bengal in Mamata Banerjee," Roy, a former railway minister, said.
