'Russia-US relations alarming'

June 21, 2007 20:09 IST

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Thursday that the current state of Russia-US relations was alarming.

"There has developed an alarm in the world in connection with the current situation," Lavrov said in a speech at the Carnegie Endowment Centre in Moscow.

He added there was a gap in the foreign policy aspirations of Moscow and Washington.

"Russia will by no means yield to any attempts at idealisation, let alone those coming from outside," Itar-Tass news agency quoted him as saying.

Lavrov also said Russia wanted wider discussions on a major arms pact, after talks in Vienna this month ended in deadlock.

"We do not want to bury the CFE," Lavrov said, referring to the 1990 Conventional Forces in Europe treaty.
