A 19-year-old national player in Taekwondo and Wushu, who bravely fought off a man trying to molest her and then handed him over to the police, has been rewarded by the Delhi Police Commissioner B S Bassi for her bravery and courage.

The BA first year student was felicitated with a Commendation Roll by Bassi along with a cash reward of Rs 10,000 at the Delhi Police Headquarters in New Delhi on Monday afternoon.

Speaking to reporters after awarding the girl, Bassi said that she has set an example for other girls.

"I always say that girls should be trained in self defence so that they can defend themselves in case of any aggression. I hope the brave act of this girl will inspire other girls," said Bassi.

The girl is a black and red belt holder in marshal arts and taken part in several national level events.

The incident took place on Friday evening around 6:30 pm when the girl was returning home after attending her Wushu classes when one person, who was later identified as Rajesh Gupta (28) passed objectionable comments on her and tried to outrage her modesty.

"This act was strongly opposed by the girl. She hit him back and using her training in martial arts, overpowered him. She then called her trainer Amit Goswami and with his help, she handed him over to police," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Madhur Verma.

Police registered a case of molestation at Burari Police Station and the accused person was arrested. The investigation of the case is in progress.

The girl has also taken part in two international events where she won one silver and one bronze medal.
