Swine flu in India: Mother-son duo tests positive

A mother-son duo have tested positive for swine flu in the country, making it the second confirmed case for the deadly disease.

The samples of the two patients, a 34-year-old woman and her five-year-old son, who were admitted in the identified isolation facility at Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, have tested positive for swine flu.

Both travelled from the United States to India via Dubai and reached Chennai on May 28, 2009. Subsequently, they travelled to Coimbatore the same day.

They reported to the identified health facility as the child had fever before leaving USA. They are on treatment with Oseltamivir and presently afebrile. All their local contacts have been traced and their health status is being monitored.

The passengers of the flights, the duo were travelling in, are being traced and advised to monitor their health status.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has reported 15,510 laboratory confirmed cases of swine flu infection from 53 countries as on May 29, 2009.

There have been 99 deaths all over the world due to the deadly disease.

Meanwhile, health screening of passengers coming from affected countries is continuing in 21 International airports. 47,707 passengers have been screened on June 1.

Around 21,274 passengers were from affected countries. 221 doctors and 88 paramedics have been deployed to man 76 counters at the airports. Two passengers who arrived at Delhi airport were shifted to the isolation facility. Till date about 12.77 lakh passengers have been screened. So far samples of 131 persons have been tested of which three, including the duo, have been tested positive for swine flu.

The rest of the samples have been found negative for the novel virus. Samples of five persons are under process. Out of these, 48 were identified through health screening at International Airports and the rest were samples from persons who have self reported.

All three positive samples are of persons who travelled to India from affected countries. As of now there has been no further spread.
