Last updated on: July 06, 2011 10:53 IST

Nine policemen were injured, five of them critically, in a deadly terrorist strike in north Kashmir's Sopore town on Wednesday morning.

A senior police officer said terrorists initially fired two rifle grenades towards the Sopore station, which exploded without causing any damage in the backyard of the police station building.

"Immediately after the blasts, a group of policemen went outside to locate the place where from the grenades had been fired. Terrorists triggered a pre-planted improvised explosive device they had kept inside a parked scooter when the policemen neared it," the officer said.

"Nine policemen were injured in the blast, five of whom with critical injuries were referred to Srinagar by attending doctors at Sopore," he added.

The area was immediately surrounded for searches. Authorities also rushed reinforcements to the area.

Tension is high in the town, which has witnessed several encounters between security forces and terrorists recently.
