Singh was totally taken by surprise when Gandhi walked up to him. The two exchanged pleasantries briefly and the SP chief then thanked Gandhi with folded hands.
After Gandhi left, Bharatiya Janata Party patriarch L K Advani, who was standing a few steps behind Mulayam, also wished him. Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee also walked towards the Mulayam on seeing Gandhi and greeted him.
Singh was born on November 22, 1939.
