SC upholds Kasab' death sentence

Last updated on: September 1, 2012 09:27 IST

On Wednesday, August 29, 2012, India's Supreme Court upheld the death penalty imposed on 25-year-old Pakistani terrorist Ajmal Amir Kasab convicted under Section 302 of IPC (murder) and terror-related provisions of Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks.
The globally condemned Mumbai terror attacks, began on Wednesday, November 26 and lasted until Saturday, November 29, 2008, resulting in166 people killed and at least 308 wounded.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday upheld the death sentence of 26/11 Mumbai terror attack convict Mohammed Ajmal Amir Kasab, saying that waging war against the country was the primary and foremost offence committed by the Pakistani terrorist.

A bench of justices Aftab Alam and C K Prasad dismissed the plea of 25-year-old Kasab challenging his conviction and death sentence confirmed by the Bombay high court.

The bench rejected his contention that he was not given a free and fair trial in the case.

The bench also observed that the failure of government to provide him an advocate at the pre-trial stage did not vitiate trial court proceedings against him.

Whether it was helplessness in the face of an angry Opposition demanding answers over coal block allocations or the din that drowned his statement and led to adjournment of both Houses of Parliament, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh sought to hit back at detractors with poetry. The logjam in Parliament entered its second week on Monday with BJP members stridently demanding the resignation of Singh on the issue of coal block allocation. Both the Houses were adjourned till noon as BJP members continued their vociferous protests against the government. The PM came out of the Lok Sabha and said: "Hazaaron jawabon se acchi hai meri khamoshi, na jaane kitne sawaalon ka aabru rakhe." (With my silence that is better than a thousand answers, I don't know how many questions I dignify).

Bollywood actor and star of the film Joker,Chitrangda Singh appears in a striking new joint ad for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and Joker.
The ad captures her "bleeding" after an alien uses a syringe-like mascara wand on her eye, and the caption reads, What If Aliens Tested on Humans? Ban Cosmetics Testing on Animals!
The point is that testing cosmetics on animals is harmful and deadly to the animals themselves and also bad science - and the government should ban it.
