6 year-old's kidneys 'missing' after operation at AIIMS, says father

The father of a six-year-old girl has alleged that a doctor at Delhi's All India Institute of Medical Sciences hospital removed both her kidneys during surgery.

Pavan Kumar, who is from Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh, says his daughter has been on dialysis since March 14. He has filed a complaint with the police. He had come to the hospital last year with the child, who had a problem in her left kidney.

A senior surgeon of the paediatrics department reportedly told the family that the kidney had to be removed. Kumar said the surgery took place on March 14. After a couple of days, his daughter complained of severe pain.

A scan was taken, Kumar said, and the test report said no kidney was visible. "I then asked the doctor who, however, did not answer my queries properly. I tried speaking to the AIIMS administration failing which I approached the Hauz Khas police," he said.

According to a test report at AIIMS dated December 8, months before the surgery, the child's right kidney was in good condition.

The hospital has constituted a high-powered committee of senior professors to investigate the father's allegations. "The allegations made by the patient's father are of serious nature. A high-powered committee of senior professors has been constituted to probe the matter and clear the issues," a senior doctor said.

The committee held a meeting on May 20 and will again meet this week before submitting its report, said the doctor.
