January 15, 2013 22:40 IST

A day after a seven-year old girl was raped in her school, the port town of Vasco remained tense on Tuesday, while the state police constituted an SIT to crack down the case.

There were protests in the port town of Vasco through the day and the commercial activities in the town remained shut.

Following a rally held in the morning, a day-long bandh was observed in the port town.

The girl was raped in the school toilet Monday morning during the school hours. Medical examination has confirmed the sexual assault on the minor.

The crime branch, which is currently investigating the case, was not able to track down the accused although they arrested the headmistress of the school holding her responsible for the negligence.

Deputy Inspector General O P Mishra said the team will work on all the possible clues to arrest the accused.

The perpetrator has been identified as a person in his mid-20s, he said, adding he was seen wearing blue jeans and blue, white and black stripe long-sleeve shirt on the school premises before he committed the crime.

Police have already prepared a sketch of the accused according to the description given by the victim and another teacher, who had seen him loitering on the school premises.

A case has been registered under different sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act 2012 in addition to IPC and Goa Children's Act, 2003 against the unknown man.

Mishra said counterparts from other states, especially neighbouring states, have been alerted.
