A year after one of its top priests officiated a US hotelier's fattest wedding, Delhi's Sikh religious administration now plans to launch a movement to rein in trends that it says put an unfair burden on families of brides.
Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee chief Paramjit Singh Sarna said he will hold a meeting of community leaders on July 28 to discuss ways to encourage simple weddings.
"The whole idea is to curb this competition for elaborate weddings among Sikhs. Why should families who cannot afford them be put through this race? All Sikh weddings, ideally, should be simple," he remarked.
Last year, DSGMC priest Giani Hem Singh officiated the wedding of New York socialite Vikram Chatwal, son of US businessman Sant Singh Chatwal, with model Priya Sachdev in New Delhi.
The event was more than a marriage, with planeloads of jet-setters arriving in Delhi for the fete.
Former US president Bill Clinton made a toast at the wildly elaborate wedding that was also attended by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, steel baron Laxmi Mittal and a parade of celebrities.
