The Supreme Court has reserved its judgment in the Navjot Singh Sidhu case. The judgment is now expected on Friday morning.

The two-judge Bench, comprising Justice G P Mathur and Justice R V Raveendran, heard the matter on Thursday in which Sidhu had challenged the Punjab and Haryana high court order passed last month, which sentenced him to three years imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on him in a 1989 road rage murder case.

The Bench then reserved its judgment.

On Thursday morning, the Bench of the apex court asked Harish Salve, advocate for Sidhu, to continue his argument and tell the court as to why it should entertain the appeal filed by his client to allow the latter to contest the Amritsar byelection for Lok Sabha.

The Punjab government opposed the petition filed by Sidhu saying that he was taking a high moral ground by telling the court that he did not take long to resign from his seat after the high court convicted him in December.

"And now he wants to go to the people's court. Where was his high moral ground when he lied in the court and claimed that he was simply pacifying the crowd and had nothing to with the case. If the honourable court has already made up its mind to allow him as an exception, then it would open floodgates for similar petitions from other politicians as well," Sushil Kumar, arguing on behalf of Punjab government. said.
