A Siwan police team left for Delhi on Friday to arrest controversial Rashtriya Janata Dal Member of Parliament Mohammad Shahabuddin.

Superintendent of Police Sanjay Kumar Singh said the team would approach Delhi police for assistance in arresting Shahabuddin. He  refused to set any time frame for the arrest and said, "we are making all efforts".

Bihar Chief Secretary G S Kang had recently said three warrants of arrest were marked to Hussainganj police station's officer in-charge for execution. The cases relate to recovery of illegal firearms, ammunition of Pakistan make, unaccounted foreign currency, a deer and photographs of the MP and his men with a hunted deer from his Pratappur premises during a raid on April 24.

  • Meanwhile, the Hussainganj police on Friday registered cases under the Arms Act against Shahabuddin, his wife, father and brother for not surrendering their firearms despite cancellation of their licenses.

The Siwan district magistrate in an order Thursday noted that despite his predecessor C K Anil cancelling the firearms licences,  Shahabuddin and his family had not surrendered the weapons in violation of section 25 of Arms Act. Taking strong note of non-compliance of the order, the DM instructed the Hussainganj officer-in-charge to take action against them.

While Shahabuddin holds licenses for a rifle and a DBBL gun (a shotgun), his wife has licences for a DBBL gun, a rifle and a pistol. Arms in the name of Shahabuddin's father include a DBBL gun, a rifle and a revolver, while his brother S M Samsuddin owns a rifle and a DBBL gun.
