Nobel laureate Amartya Sen bereaved

Nobel laureate Amartya Sen's mother Amita Sen passed away at Shantiniketan in West Bengal on Monday after prolonged illness, family sources said.

She was 92 and is survived by son Amartya Sen and a daughter Supurna Dutta.

Amita, who was known as 'Ashram Kanya', wrote several books on Rabindranath Tagore and Shantiniketan. Rabindranath Tagore himself inducted her father Acharya Khistimohan Sen as a teacher at Shantiniketan.

Amita Sen's husband Ashutosh Sen, a soil scientist, predeceased her in 1971.
