Anil Chowdhry, an IPS officer of the 1969 batch, was on Friday appointed as the new special secretary in the Union home ministry and tipped to get the crucial subjects of internal security and Kashmir.

Chowdhry, an IPS officer from the Union Territory cadre, was presently serving as special director in the Intelligence Bureau upon his return from the United States earlier this year.

Chowdhry, whose name was cleared by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, was likely to take over the Jammu and Kashmir assignment and Internal Security, a post which was lying vacant after B B Misra took over as the Director General of Orissa, official sources said.

Chowdhry had served at the Kashmir desk in the IB during the initial phase of turmoil in Jammu and Kashmir and was seen as one of the person's instrumental in revival of intelligence gathering mechanism in the state at a period when it had collapsed completely in early 90's.

Besides serving as a diplomat at the Indian embassy in the US, Chowdhry had also a stint in the VIP security of the Union home ministry.

The government also appointed B B Wanchoo, a 1976 West Bengal IPS officer, as the new Director of Special Protection Group handling the security of the prime minister.

Wanchoo, who was handling the security matters in the Intelligence Bureau as Joint Director, was in the SPG during the tenure of Rajiv Gandhi as the prime minister.
