February 12, 2009 13:57 IST
A fresh post-morterm has been ordered by the district authorities on the body of Arindam Manna, the investigating officer in Rizwanur Rehman's death case, after Manna's family complained that the first autopsy was carried out in a hurry.

"The second post-mortem will be carried on the body at the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital," the additional director general (railways), Dilip Mitra, said.

The district magistrate of Howrah, Khalil Ahmed, ordered the fresh autopsy on Manna's body after his family members lodged a complaint with the police in Dasnagar that the previous autopsy at Walsh Hospital in Serampore on Wednesday was carried out in haste.

Manna's body was found lying on the side of railway tracks near Mankundu station near Serampore in Hooghly.

Rizwanur's body was also found by the side of a rail track at Dum Dum on September 21, 2007, days after his marriage with Priyanka Todi, daughter of industrialist Ashok Todi.

According to Mitra, the police have initiated a murder case with the Government Raiway Police, Seoraphuli. "I will personally look into the matter and treat the case with utmost seriousness," he said.

The investigations into Manna's death as a suspected murder began after his family brushed aside the police's claim that he committed suicide.

Meanwhile, a report from Dasnagar in Howrah district, where Manna's family stays, said district Youth Congress workers were on Thursday observing a 12-hour bandh at Dasnagar in protest against Manna's unnatural death.

They also put up a rail blockade at Dasnagar on the Howrah-Kharagpur section of the south-eastern railway on Thursday morning, disrupting train services for 20 minutes.
