At least 2603 government primary and secondary schools in Bihar are functioning without buildings and 147 do not have any land, the state assembly was informed on Tuesday.

Replying to a short notice question of Meena Devi of Janata Dal (United), Human Resource Development Minister Brishen Patel said 22,413 rooms in schools are in a dilapidated condition, in need of extensive repair.

The minister said over 11,000 posts of teachers were lying vacant for a long time and the process of recruitment will be set in motion soon.

Patel reaffirmed the National Democratic Alliance government's commitment to improving the academic atmosphere and said infrastructure in all schools will be strengthened.

"Schools running in the open will have buildings and old ones will be repaired on a priority basis," he said but refused to set any time-frame for the purpose. "We are on the job and results will soon be there for everybody to see."
