SC need not always be correct: CJI

November 14, 2006 13:57 IST

In the midst of a raging debate over the powers of various organs of the Constitution, Chief Justice of India Y K Sabharwal on Tuesday said no institution was infallible and the Supreme Court need not always be correct, but what it said was final.

"The Supreme Court decision is final not necessarily because it is right. Every human being, every institution has limitations. No institution is infallible. But since we are final, we are called Supreme Court," the CJI said in reply to a question from a child at a function on National Child Rights Week at the apex court premises.

This was the first time such a function was organised in the apex court on the occassion of Children's Day.

The CJI advocated the necessity of concerted steps for upholding children's rights.
