SC vacates stay in Gateway bomb blasts case

Last updated on: March 27, 2006 16:35 IST
The Supreme Court on Monday vacated the stay, earlier granted in Mumbai bomb blasts case, in which 54 people were killed and more than 244 injured at Jhaveri Bazar and Gateway of India.

A bench comprising Mr Justice H K Sema and Mr Justice A R Lakshamanan vacated the stay against the trial proceedings in the case.

Six of the accused -- Sayeed Mohd Hanif Abdul, Shafiq Ahmad, Mrs Fehmida Sayeed Mohd Hanif, Zahid Yaqoob Patna and Mohammad Hasan Mohammad and Mohammad Rizwan -- had appealed, after the Prevention Of Terrorism Act review committee appointed by Maharashtra government decided that no case under POTA was made out against the accused.

The court had earlier granted stay of proceedings after hearing the counsel for appellants, who pleaded that since they were not involved in the activities covered under POTA the proceeding against them should be quashed.
