Goa rape: Russia seeks India's urgent action

January 29, 2010 02:32 IST

Angry over incidents of sexual assault on its nationals in Goa, Russia has said local authorities were not doing enough to nab the culprits but added that a travel advisory will not be issued immediately as it will watch what steps the Indian government takes.

Russian Ambassador to India Alexander Kadakin said the situation in Goa was not alright as the rape of nine year-old girl was the fourth such incident in the state in the recent past.

"Russians provoke or something like that was mentioned by some MPs or MLAs in Goa... but how can a nine year-old little girl provoke. How can it be? Just the situation is not alright and Goan authorities are not doing everything to investigate and to find culprits," an angry Kadakin said.

Ruling out issuing any travel advisory immediately, he said Russia would watch the steps taken by the government.

"We do not have any proposal on issuing an advisory just now. We will see how the events unfold in Goa and how the government reacts to our protest. We expect the Indian side to take immediate steps to catch the culprits in the crime," Kadakin said.

Demanding strong action against the culprits in the all the cases, the Russian Ambassador said, "This is not the first case of such nature. There have three more such cases before and there has been no action. So, the government must take all necessary actions to provide security."

Kadakin said he has already communicated his "attitude" on the issue to Home Minister P Chidambaram and asked the government to take all necessary steps to improve the crime situation in Goa.
