Robbers kill woman, flee with ornaments in Mumbai

A 38-year-old woman was stabbed to death in the wee hours of Tuesday and her husband seriously injured after being robbed by two motorcycle-borne persons at Parel in central Mumbai, according to the police.

The victims, Beena and Jitin Dedia, were taking a morning walk at approximately 5.45 am when the masked robbers intercepted them and snatched their ornaments and other belongings, they said.

According to the police, Jitin, a grocery store owner, and Beena, were walking on a footpath along the G D Ambedkar Marg, when they were confronted by the two robbers.

"The robbers tried to snatch Beena's earrings, but the couple resisted. Beena was stabbed on her neck with a sharp weapon. Shaken by the robbers' act, Jitin gave his gold chain and wallet collectively valued at Rs 15,000," said R B Poman, senior inspector of Kalachowkie police station.

Subsequently, the robbers zoomed off with the victims' belongings, he said. Jitin was also stabbed on his hands, Poman said, adding that the couple was rushed to nearby KEM hospital, where Beena was declared dead.

Keeping in view the surge in the number of chain snatching incidents in central Mumbai, the city police has formed a special team to curb such incidents.
