A girl student at a primary teachers training school at Patan on Monday levelled rape charges against six teachers, triggering protests among students and parents who went on a rampage beating up teachers and the principal.

A student of Primary Teacher's Course College in Patan, around 130 kms from Ahmedabad, alleged that her six teachers repeatedly raped her during a period of four months.

The police have arrested all the six accused teachers.

The incident came to light when the victim collapsed during morning prayers in the college campus last Saturday. She was taken to a doctor where she revealed that she was a victim of sexual abuse.

Around 98 girl students studying in the college had gone to the principal on Saturday demanding action against those involved in the heinous crime.

The principal instead of informing the police about the incident, wrote to higher authorities of the education department.

"The victim in her complaint has said the teachers had threatened to fail her if she did not extend sexual favours to the teachers," the police said.

The victim, in her complaint, said she was being sexually abused by the six teachers since September 2007 and was repeatedly raped by them at different places.

"Many girl students alleged that they have been sexually molested by the same teachers at the college. We have added sections of sexual molestation in the complaint," in-charge Superintendent of Police of Patan district Raghvendra Vats told PTI.

"We came to know about the sexual assault on the girl upon reaching the college on receiving the news of outbreak of violence there," he said.

Police sources said the principal instead of informing the police tried to delay action against the teachers by writing to his superiors.

The dilly-dallying attitude on the part of the principal had angered the students and their parents who indulged in violence and beat up teachers and the principal this afternoon after which the police arrived at the scene.

Window panes, doors and vehicles of the teachers of the college were damaged in the ensuing rampage, the police said.

Minister of state for education Maya Kodnani and revenue minister Anandi Patel, who represent the Patan assembly constituency, visited the college. The education department is yet to take any action in the matter.

Kodnani told PTI, "The principal had written a letter on Saturday to his director about the sexual abuse of the girl. We will soon taken action against all those involved".
