Britain's 'hooded rapist' dies in prison

January 10, 2004 09:25 IST

British rapist Peter Cook, who terrorised women in Cambridge, has died in Winchester Prison, the BBC quoted a Home Office spokeswoman as saying on Friday.

Cook, 75, raped six women and injured two others in the university town in a series of sex attacks in the mid-1970s.

He was also convicted of committing an act of gross indecency on a ninth woman.

Cook was known as the 'hooded rapist' because of a distinctive leather mask he wore during his crimes.

He was caught after one of Britain's biggest manhunts.

In 1975, he was given two life sentences after his trial at Norwich Crown Court.
