In a swift move to maintain law and order, the Maharashtra government has imposed curfew in the radius of one kilometer outside the Kalyan court.

Hundreds of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena supporters were expected to gather outside the court to see their leader Raj Thackeray who will appear before it on Wednesday afternoon.

The police resorted to cane charge on MNS supporters who were present in large numbers outside the court despite heavy police presence.

The government has also clamped section 144 in the area (which means not more than five people can assemble near the court premises) but that did not deter MNS supporters, who threw stones on policemen like they did on Tuesday outside the Bandra court.

In the morning, Raj Thackeray's wife, Sharmila Thackeray camped outside the Manpada police station where her husband had spent his night.

Three persons were killed and over 170 arrested in neighbouring Thane after violence erupted there following the arrest of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray, police said.

Meanwhile, three deaths were reported in the Pisoli village area in Kalyan on Tuesday night following a clash between two groups, Thane Police Commissioner Anil Dhere told PTI.

"We have made 179 arrests in the Thane commissionerate area since Tuesday night in connection with violence," Dhere said.

The three dead have been identified as Omprakash Dubey, Mayur Dubey and Gurunath Bhoir, the brother of a local MNS leader.

Violence erupted in Kalyan and surrounding areas on Tuesday night after arrested MNS leader Raj Thackeray was taken to the Manpada police station in Dombivali in connection with the assault on candidates who appeared for railway recruitment exams on October 19.

Incidents of arson and looting were witnessed outside Manpada police station on Tuesday night but the situation in Thane is presently peaceful, Dhere said.

The Mumbai police will move the magistrate's court in Vikhroli seeking cancellation of the bail awarded to Raj in February after he was arrested for making statements against members of the north Indian community.
