Country receives 15 per cent less rainfall: IMD

The country has received 15 per cent less rainfall this season, with Delhi being the worst hit, the Indian Meteorological Department said on Friday.

However, it said the situation might improve in the coming days.

"Seventeen states, including the national capital, are rain deficient, while two states fall in the scanty rainfall category. The rest have witnessed good rainfall," IMD Director Dr S K Subramaniam said.

Delhi has a shortfall of 77 per cent, followed by Rajasthan (60 per cent).

Other rain deficient regions are Vidarbha in Maharashtra (34 per cent), North-east (28 per cent) and Central India (21 per cent), he said.

Subramaniam, however, hoped things would look up in the remaining two months of the season.

"The country receives rainfall till September. We still have two months remaining and things might improve if the system gets strengthened," he said.
 
Low pressure area has now moved over Madhya Pradesh, which might cause heavy rains in Orissa, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh and northern Andhra Pradesh, he said.
