Ever since news broke last week about China’s incursion into Chumur sector in Ladakh, interestingly at a time when Chinese President Xi Jinping was in India on a path-breaking bilateral visit, statements have been flowing from both the government as well as the Opposition about the incident.

While the government insists that it has taken up the matter strongly with the Chinese side, the Opposition, notably the Congress party, has questioned the Narendra Modi government’s ability and intent to stand up to the Chinese.

Given that public memory is short, we felt it was the right time to go back a little in history and test your memory about who said what and when about China with a little quiz. Enjoy!

1.Who said this?
"The defence or external affairs minister should give a suo motustatement on the actual terms and conditions of restoring the status quo with China, because there are many theories floating around,” including that India has agreed to stop further development of infrastructure in the Ladakh area, and demolish its bunkers near the border. “We want that India should continue building a new additional (army) corps for the area.” ‘The government has failed to end the Chinese incursion and the prime minister should intervene to end the stand-off. The incursion by Chinese troops is a very serious matter, the prime minister should take charge because flag meetings between the Indian and Chinese armies have failed to end the stand off.’
A. Sonia Gandhi last week
B. Mamata Banerjee this morning
C. Prakash Javadekar in 2013

2.Who said this?
"China's interference in India is very serious. The nation should be told the truth. We are deeply concerned about the reported interference by China on the borders with India at quite deep level. It is a very serious matter." "If there is some danger, the government must brief all parties as to the steps being taken so that it does not become cancerous."
A. Mulayam Singh Yadav last week

C. Ravi Shankar Prasad in 2013

3.Who said this?
"The government's approach is very weak, the government is perhaps suffering from a complex viz-a-viz China and that is highly demoralising for the forces. The way 13 or 14 incursions have taken place, the way they have entered 10 km and there has been no resistance shows that the government's external affairs and defence policy is weak.” "They take your water from Brahmaputra. They are tampering with your relations with Pakistan and encouraging them. You have to take a total review of the foreign policy regarding China and there must be a consensus in the country."
A. Dr Manmohan Singh today
B. Jayalalithaa last week
C. Murli Manohar Joshi in 2013

4.Which is this party?
The main opposition party has been demanding tough action against Chinese incursion and even cautioned that this could escalate into a "Kargil-like" situation. After discussing the Chinese incursions in its parliamentary party meeting, it asked the government to come clear on the kind of equipment and weapons being used by the Indian forces to face the Chinese threat.
A. The Congress party last week.
B. The Trinamool Congress
C. The BJP in 2013.

5. Who said this?
"The same thing happened in 1962, when repeatedly it was said that there is no problem and the slogans of Indo-China brothers were being said and then suddenly a war was fought. We just hope the government does not keep sleeping this time.” "So, we want that whatever the government says, any explanation they give, should be after seeing and examining all the facts because the country is worried about this situation."
A. Omar Abdullah
B. Digvijaya Singh
C. Sushma Swaraj in 2013
