A Chandigarh court on Saturday issued summons to Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh in a criminal defamation suit filed against him by his predecessor and Shiromani Akali Dal chief Parkash Singh Badal. Chief Judicial Magistrate C L Mohal told the chief minister to appear in court on September 20.

Badal has sought Rs 5 crore (Rs 50 million) in damages from Amarinder Singh accusing the chief minister of defaming him with regard to his assets. He has also accused the chief minister of launching a campaign to defame and intimidate Akali Dal leaders and workers.

Corruption cases have been filed against Badal and his relatives while vigilance officials have carried out raids at their properties.
